The earliest known Jewish settlers in Martinsburg were Bostian Pigle and Abraham Goosman ca. 1790. There was no permanent Jewish settlement until the period 1870-1890 when the Fine, Gutman, Katz, Kirson, Levy, Lipsic, Lobenthal, Miller Snyder, & Weil families settled in Martinsburg. Most were engaged in the retail trade.
