Dr. Max B.D. Apfeldorf - Martinsburg - Dr. Max Bernard David Apfeldorf, 71, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday in City Hospital. He was the son of the late Jonas and Helene Hand Apfeldorf. He was a graduate of City College of New York and received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. He was employed as a clinical psychologist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was a member of the Beth Jacob Synagogue, where he served as president for 40 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis, served as a board member for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters and was active in many business and professional organizations. He leaves his wife, J. Winifred Meldrim Apfeldorf, at home; two daughters, Wendy E. Robinson of Martinsburg and Dr. Karyn M. Apfeldorf of Austin, Texas; one son Michael G. Apfeldorf of Shepherdstown; one brother, Erwin Apfeldorf of New York City. Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at the Brown Funeral Home, with Rabbi Charles P. Rabinowitz officiating. Interment will be in Beth Jacob Cemetery. Memorial contributions to: Beth Jacob Synagogue, 126 W. Martin Street, Martinsburg.

 

[Alvin] Brody Services - Funeral services for Alvin Brody, 73, of Martinsburg, who died Friday, at City Hospital, were held Monday at the Brown Funeral Home, with Rabbi Morris Kosman officiating. Interment was in Beth Jacob Cemetery. Bearers were Jim Steptoe, Gregg Wachtel, George Karos, Thomas Carte, Steve Weiss and Gregg Trussman.

 

M. Cohen, 58, Dies At Home Here; Services Thursday Afternoon - Leading Merchant and Businessman Here Yields To Pneumonia Attack

Mendel Cohen, for the past twenty-three years, a leading merchant of Martinsburg and known widely as a firm friend and a good citizen died Wednesday morning about 6:45 at his home, Cohen Apartments, 133 North Queen street, after a long period of poor health with heart and pulmonary troubles. Pneumonia setting in several days ago, is believed by his physician, Dr. Wainwright, of Baltimore, Md., specialist, to have hastened his death. Mr. Cohen was born in Russia 58 years ago. He came to this country at the age of 19, settling first in Florence, S.C.; later coming to Winchester, Va., and coming to Martinsburg in 1910. Since that time he has been senior member of the firm M. Cohen and Son, retail women’s clothing store; he has been active in the business life of the community, and a leader in Jewish religious and charitable work here. He was one of the most active founders and supporters of Bash Yonkev [sic] Synagogue, North Martinsburg, and the cemetery in connection with the synagogue. He was particularly interested in Jewish charities, was head here of the Palestine Relief Fund; past president of B’nai B’rith; and was director of [the] Chamber of Commerce until ill health forced him to give this up. He leaves two sons; Lou Cohen, junior member of the firm here; and Sol Cohen, of Leavenworth, Kansas; and a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Adelson of Baltimore, Md. Leah Adelson of Baltimore is a granddaughter. Mrs. Cohen died nearly four years ago. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Thursday afternoon, from Cohen Apartments with Rabbi Framm of Hagerstown, Md., officiating. Interment will be in the Bash Yonkev Cemetery, North Martinsburg.

 

Sol Cohen, Businessman, Local Civic Leader, Dies - Sol Cohen, 83, prominent local businessman, civic leader, and president of the Berkeley Upholstering Company, died unexpectedly Saturday in Miami Beach, Fla. Where he had been vacationing for the past month. A native of Augusta, Ga., he received his early education in the public schools of South Carolina, and was a 1913 graduate of the Baltimore, Md., Polytechnic Institute. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917 and served throughout World War I in the 409th Telegraph Battalion of the Army Signal Corps, largely overseas. Following his discharge, he established himself in Leavenworth, Kansas, and numbered among his endeavors, the patenting and successful national merchandising of an intricate inner-spring mattress device. In 1937, he returned to Martinsburg to join his brother in the operation of the M. Cohen & Son ladies apparel store. Shortly thereafter he purchased the Berkeley Upholstering Company and thenceforth devoted his full time to the operation of that enterprise. He was associated over the years with numerous religious, fraternal, and community groups, holding 50 year memberships in the Kiwanis, B’nai B’rith, and Masonic organizations. He was a member and past president of the Beth Jacob Synagogue, Martinsburg. He was co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Eastern Panhandle Roundtable, co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, a member of Governor Moore’s Advisory Council of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Shenandoah Area Council of the Boy’s Scouts of America. He was a member of the Eastern Panhandle Shrine Club, Hiram Lodge No 68 A.F & A.M., Leavenworth United Commercial Travelers’, Travelers’ Protective Association, a past president and director of the Berkeley County Historical Society, a member of the Friends of the Library, of the Newton D. Baker Post No. 896 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Berkeley Post No 14, the American Legion, and a director of the Shepherd College Foundation. As Chairman of the financial advisory committee for the Martinsburg Public Library Commission, he organized and spearheaded a fund-raising campaign which made possible the building the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Library now occupies. He was the son of the late Mendel and Rebecca D. Cohen. His wife, the former Irene Friedberg, whom he married in 1919, died in 1974. Survivors include his brother, Louis Cohen, 133 North Queen St., Martinsburg, one daughter, Mrs. Nadia C. Elins, three grandchildren, Michael, Anna, and Daniel Elins and several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted by Rabbi Harvey Rosenfeld, of Hagerstown, Md. At the Brown Funeral Home at 1:30 pm Thursday with burial at the Beth Jacob Synagogue cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Wquality Lodge No. 44 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home from 7 to 9 pm. It is requested that flowers be omitted and any remembrances take the form of contributions to the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Library.

 

Nadia C. Elins - Library Commissioner - Martinsburg - Nadia C. Elins, 67, died Friday at City Hospital following a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Irene and Sol Cohen. She was 1943 class valedictorian of Martinsburg High School and a graduate of both Stephens College of Columbia, Mo., and Barnard College of Columbia University in New York. She was a member of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Library Commission since 1957, and was appointed Commissioner Emeritus in 1993. She was instrumental in the planning and development of the present library building. She served as corporation secretary and was later named president of the Berkeley Upholstering Company. She was a member of Congregation Beth Jacob Synagogue, Martinsburg, and a past president of its Women’s Auxiliary. She was a member of Beth El Congregation, Winchester; Phi Beta Kappa; the West Virginia Library Association; charter member of the Friends of the Library; American Association of University Women; and the Richard III Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Elins, and a daughter Anna F. Elins. She leaves two sons, Michael D. Elins of Martinsburg, and Daniel J. Elins of Alexandria, Va. Services will be 2 pm Tuesday at the Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg with Rabbi Howard Folb officiating. Interment will be at the Congregation Beth Jacob Cemetery, Martinsburg. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 pm Monday at the funeral home and the family residence following Tuesday’s services. Charles Fine Dies At Age of 83 - Charles Fine, 83, on January 10 of this year and a resident at 216 West Race Street, died last night around 7:15 in City Hospital where he had been a patient two weeks. He was born in the small village of Zemel, Lithuania, and came to the United States in 1895. He first came lived in Anderson, S.C. and came to Martinsburg one year later. He was known as one of the earliest "peddlers" having gone in business with Joseph Eckstein of Baltimore. Hew came to Martinsburg because his brother, Louis, had a local store. After a time he went in business with his brother and remained in that business until 1929 when that firm was dissolved. Following dissolution of that business, he went in to the grocery business with his sons, Simon and Israel, at 222 North Queen Street. In 1936 he gave up the grocery business and opened the City Junk Yard on West Race Street. He was in that business until death. He was one of the founders of the Beth [Jacob] Synagogue in 1911 and served as its president a number of times. He was a member of the Odd Fellows for 40 years and a member of the Macabees. His wife, Mrs. Fannie Fine, preceded him in death in 1936. He is survived by three sons - Simon, Israel and Harry Fine, of Baltimore; two grandchildren - Faye Ann at the home and Phyllis, Baltimore. He is an uncle of Sol, Harry, Reuben and Nathan Fine. Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 at Beth Jacob Synagogue and burial will be in the Beth Jacob Cemetery. The family asks that flowers be omitted.

 

Mrs. Fannie Fine - Mrs. Fannie Fine, 63, wife, of Charles Fine, and one of the oldest and best known Jewish residents of Martinsburg, died very suddenly Tuesday evening. In company with her son, Israel, she had gone to hose Company No. 4 headquarters on high Street to participate in a card party sponsored by the Hebrew Ladies’ Auxiliary, with which she was prominently identified, making the trip from the home on Race street to the hall in a taxicab. Relatives said she appeared in the best of spirits and apparently was enjoying her usual good health when leaving from the cab, she complained of feeling badly, and her son and friends assisted her to a chair on the first floor of the hall. Shortly thereafter she suffered a hemorrhage and was rushed to King’s Daughter’s Hospital. She died a few minutes after he arrival at the hospital. News of her sudden death came as a shock to her relatives and many friends, as she was one of the best known and most beloved Jewish residents of the city. Mrs. Fine was a native of Lithuania, coming to Martinsburg immediately upon her arrival in the united States about 35 years ago. She was a Miss Schwartz before marriage. She was a prominent member of the Bash [sic] Yonkev Synagogue here, and a past president of the Hebrew Ladies’ Auxiliary in Martinsburg. She was an extremely charitable, giving freely to those in need, to both Jews and Gentiles, and worked untiringly to raise money for the care and education of members of her faith in Europe. This work included the arranging and helping with benefit suppers and other affairs sponsored by members of the local Jewish circle. Internationally known rabbis, during trips through this section, frequently visited at her home, only last week she entertained for several days Rabbi Silker, professor in the Yeshiva of Slobodke, Lithuania, who is on tour of Amerca. She is survived by her husband; three sons, Simon, Israel and Harry Fine, who operate the People’s Grocery on North Queen street; two brothers, Jacob and Louis Schwartz, and a sister, Mrs. F. Rubenstein of San Francisco, Calif, and one grandchild, Phyllis Helen Fine, this city. Sol Fine, of the Mine-to-Consumer Coal Company, Attorney Reuben Fine and Harry Fine of Washington, and Nathan fine of Hancock, Md, were nephews. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the residence at 216 West Race street. The rites will be conducted by Rabbi Framm of Hagerstown, Maryland, and interment will be made in the Jewish cemetery, east of the city.

 

Israel Fine - Israel Fine, 56, of 216 West Race street, died last night in Baltimore, Md, where he had been recently hospitalized for an illness extending over the last nine weeks. Mr. Fine was born in Lithuania. He had lived in Martinsburg since 1900 and was associated with his brother, Simon, in the operation of the City Junkyard. He was a former owner of the Peoples Grocery Store on North Queen. He was a memner of the Elks Lodge, and served as president and treasurer of Beth Jacob Synagogue, Pennsylvania avenue. His father, Charles Fine, died in February of this year. He is survived by his wife, the former Bertha Cohen, of Baltimore; a daughter, Faye Ann; and two brothers - Simon, of Martinsburg, and Harry, Baltimore. The bosy will arrive in Martinsburg tonight and will be taken to the Brown Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 2 Sunday afternoon. Burial will be in the Hebrew cemetery. The family request that flowers be omitted.

 

Julius Garner - Garner, Julius, 81, of Martinsburg, died Wedensday afternoon, Dec. 18, in City Hospital. Born Dec. 18, 1910 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Daniel and Molly Finglass Garner. He was owner of Garner’s Ladies Shop and Workingman’s Store. He was a member of the Beth Jacob Synagogue. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, class of 1929. He was a member of the Exhausted Roosters, the Martinsburg Lions club, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 778; and the Equality Lodge 44, Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Libowitz Garner, at home; two sons, David E. Garner of Potomac, Md., and Jay A. Garner, Mobile, Ala.; one daughter, Rochelle R. Conklin, San Francisco; three grandchildren, Adam, Lissa and Jeremy Garner; one brother, Louis Garner, Boca Raton, Fla.; and one sister, Anna Tellum, Santa Monica, Calif. Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today from the Brown Funeral Home with Rabbi Richard Libowitz officiating wit interment in Beth Jacob Cemetery. The family will receive friends at his residence after the funeral services today. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the West Virginia Heart Association, 211 35th st. S.E., Charleston, 25304.

 

Mrs. Phillip Hack - Mrs. Nora Hack, widow of Phillip Hack, formerly of this city, died Tuesday in Memorial Hospital, Queens, N.Y. She had been residing in N.Y. with a son Leo R. Hack, for the past 18 months. She visited here last November. Born in Somerset, Pa., she spent most of her life in Martinsburg but also resided in Romney and Tarentum, Pa. While in Tarentum, where she and her husband operated a store, she was head of the Council of Jewish Women. She was a member of Beth Jacob Synagogue of which her husband was first president, and the Women of the Moose. Surviving are the son, Leo R: sister, Mrs. Myra Dormer, 200 West Martin street; granddaughter, Mrs. Gene Diamond, West Martin street; four granchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Tosemont, Kogelschatz and Coffman Funeral Home, with Rabbi Murray Saltzman, of Hagerstown, Md., officiating. Burial will be in Beth Jacob Cemetery here.

 

Phillip Hack - Phillip Hack, 83, of 110 East Martin street, a long-time merchant and active churchman, died Tuesday at 11 p.m. in City Hospital. Born in Russia on Feb. 12, 1871, he was a son of Benjamin and Bessie Saxe Hack, of that country. He had been in business here since 1907 and in 1913 built the Strand Theatre Building. He also owned the Colonial Hotel, now the Washington Hotel. He was also the first merchant to operate a ladies’ ready-to-wear clothing store here. He was an active member and one of the founders of Beth Jacob Synagogue and was one of the founders of the cemetery. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nora Hemminger Hack; son, Leo R., New York City; sister, Mrs. Bee Meyers, Miami, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Rosemont, Kogelschatz and Coffman Funeral Home, with Rabbi David Schwartz, of Hagerstown, Md. Officiating. Burial will be in Beth Jacob Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Julia Hoffman - Mrs. Julia Fine Hoffman, 76, died at 3 o’clock Sunday morning from a heart attack at her apartment in the Baldwin Building, West King Street. Although she had been suffering from a slight cold and had been under the care of her doctor for some time, the family was unaware of her condition being such as it was and death was a surprise to the children and friends. Mrs. Hoffman was born in Lithuania, daughter of the late Solomon and Rachel Wolf. She came to this country when a girl, first residing in Baltimore, where she married Louis Fine. Soon after their marriage they spent a while in Brunswick, Md., coming to this city in 1891, when he established the first department store in Martinsburg known as Fine and Snyder, at the Northeast corner of Queen and Martin street, now occupied by Katz and Son. The firm was dissolved at the death of Mr. Fine in 1899 and his widow engaged in business on her own account farther North on Queen street, with her brother-in-law Charles Fine, now residing on West Race street, as manager. She also retired about 1930, and married the late G. Hoffman, of Waynesboro, Pa., residing in that city until he died five or six years later. Since then she has resided in this city. Mrs. Hoffman was a devout member of Beth Jacob Congregation, this city, and in her younger years quite active not only in all departments of the congregation and affiliated societies, but took a keen interest in other local affairs and was widely known and highly esteemed. She was also a member of the local Eastern Star, Hadassah, a number of times president of the Hebrew Ladies Aid, and associated with the Zionist organization. Surviving are four sons - Attorney Reuben Fine, Washington; Nathan Fine, Hancock, Md; Harry and Solomon Fine, this city; also three granddaughters - Mrs. Alden Capen, Philadelphia, and Lenore Fine, of Baltimore, daughters of Nathan; Frada Lois, daughter of Solomon, and a grandson - Sigmund, son of Harry; a great-granddaughter, Julia, born last Tuesday to Mr. and Mrs. Capen and named after her great-grandmother, and two brothers - Harry and Louis Wolf, Los Angeles, Cal. Rites were held at 3:30 this afternoon from Beth Jacob Synagogue. Rabbi W. A. Buchheim, pastor B’nai Abraham Congregation, Hagerstown, Md., officiated and the remains were interred in Beth Jacob Cemetery

 

Klabansky Infant - Graveside services were held Sunday in Beth Jacob Cemetery for Cherie Elizabeth Klabansky, infant daughter of Tevis and Barbara Dodge Klabansky, 900 West King street, who died Friday night in King’s Daughters Hospital, where she was born Jan. 4. Brief services were conducted Saturday at Rosemont, Kogelschatz and Coffman Funeral Home. Survivors include the parents; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mae Dodge, 900 West King street; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Klabansky, Takoma Park, Md.

 

Louis Klabanskey - Louis Klabanskey, aged 49, prominent member of the Jewish circle here and one of the best known junk dealers in this section, died shortly before 9 o’clock Thursday morning at King’s Daughters Hospital where he had been a patient for nearly a month. Suffering from streptococci, he had been ill for about three months. Four weeks ago, when his condition became serious, he was removed to King’s Daughters Hospital. During his stay there, he underwent numerous blood transfusions, but for some time he has been regarded as in a critical condition with but a slight chance for recovery. "Louie" Klabanskey, as he was known to his wide circle of friends and acquaintances, was a native of Russia. Unaccompanied, he came to the United States when but a boy, settling in Martinsburg shortly after his arrival in this country. Twenty-five years ago he established a junk business which he operated continuously until stricken with his fatal illness. In recent years his place had been located on West Race street, near his home. By virtue of his long residence in Martinsburg and the extent of his business operations he was one of the best known men in this section. He was a member of Bash Yonkev Synagogue. He is survived by his widow, Mr. Annie Klabanskey; two children, Tevis and Miss Jeannette Klabanskey, this city; and two brothers, Ben Klabanskey, of Atlantic City, N.J., and Harry, of Arizona. The funeral will be held Friday at twelve o’clock noon from the chapel of Funeral Directors Kogelschatz and Coffman, West Martin street, with Rabbi Framm, of Hagerstown, Maryland, officiating. Burial will be made in the Jewish Cemetery east of Martinsburg.

 

Frances Liebman - Frances Liebman, 78, of Martinsburg died Thursday, August 19, 2004 at City Hospital. Born July 27, 1926, in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ida Platzez Liebman. She is survived by her close and dear friends Janice Demory and Evelyn Nazelrod of Martinsburg and her family of friends at the Martinsburg Mall. She was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley L. Hess. Gravside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2004, at the Beth Jacobs [sic] Cemetery. Arrangements by Brown Funeral home.

 

Jeannetta K. Levinson - Levinson, Jeannetta Klabansky, 74, of Bethesda, Md., formerly of Martinsburg, died Tuesday in the Holy Cross Hospital. Born Dec. 8, 1910, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Anna Relon Klabansky. She was a member of Beth Jacob Synagogue. Surviving are a daughter, Lois Levinson, Silver Spring, Md. Mrs. Bessie Lipsic - Mrs. Bessie Lipsic, 87, oldest resident of Martinsburg’s Jewish population, died Saturday evening about 4:45 at the home of her son, Louis Lipsic, Caskey Apartments, East Martin street. Death followed an illness of two weeks which was climaxed by a paralytic stroke Friday evening. A native of Lithuania, the deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lazarus Stein. She came to the United States in 1892, settling in Martinsburg and was one of the first of the Jewish [faith] to establish residence in this section. She was one of the first members of Beth Jacob Synagogue, local Jewish church. A widow of Bernard Lipsic, she was receded in death by her husband in 1923. Surviving are one son, Louis Lipsic, at whose home she died; a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Mallow, this city; two grandchildren, Bernice and Sonny Lipsic. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from Beth Jacob Synagogue. Dr. Solomon Herbet officiated, assisted by Rabbi Frome [sic], of Hagerstown, Md. And interment was in the Jewish Cemetery. Many friends and relatives of the deceased were present. Among those from out-of-town were Mr. And Mrs. Benjamin Klabansky, of Atlantic City, and Mr. And Mrs. Max Lipsic, Berkeley Springs. Bearers included: Abe Miller, Isaac Smith, Max Lipsic, Julius Luria, Tevis Klabansky and Simon Fine.

 

Doris M. Lipsic - Martinsburg - Doris M. Lipsic, 75, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson. She was the daughter of the late Albert Marler and Alta Jackson Marler. She was a graduate of Romney High School and Shepherd College, and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. She was a retired Berkeley County school teacher and an Art and English instructor at Martinsburg South Middle School for more than 30 years. She leaves two daughters, Deborah L. Hartz and Janice L. Hooe, both of Martinsburg; and three grandchildren. She was preced in death by her husband, Myron "Sonny" Lipsic. Services and interment will be private. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home. Louis Lipsic, 79, Clothier Here Many Years, Dies - Louis Lipsic, 79, Martinsburg clothier for more than half a century until his retirement in 1958, died this morning at 7:20 in the City Hospital after having been in failing health for the past several years. Mr. Lipsic, a native of Lithuania and the son of the late Bernard and Bessie Stein Lipsic, first went into business in Martinsburg in 1905 in what is now the Kinney store on North Queen street. He later bought the Hack store at Burke and Queen streets and still later purchased the Gerling Building which he sold to J.J. Newberry Company in 1930. From that time until his retirement, he operated his retain business at 153 North Queen street. He had come to the United States at the age of seven years. He was a member of the Beth Jacob Congregation, Equality Lodge No 44 of Masons and the Martinsburg Elks Lodge No 778. He received a 50 year membership pin from the Masons in 1959. His hobby was traveling, having covered practically the entire United States and Canada on various trips. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Gene Diamond, 428 West Martin street; one sister, Sara Lipsic, East Martin street; four grandchildren, Douglas P. Diamond, Barbara L. Diamond, Deborah Lipsic and Janice Lipsic; and one great-grandson, Douglas M. Diamond. A son, Lieutenant Myron "Sonny" Lipsic, died in 1954 while on active duty with the Navy air division. The body is now at Rosemont, Kogelschatz and Coffman Funeral Home, where services will be conducted Monday at 3 p.m. The family will receive freinds at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7 until 9. The family has requested that any remembrances be in the form of contributions to the Beth Jacob Synagogue or to the Heart Fund. Burial will be in the Beth Jacob Cemetery.

 

Morris Miller - Morris Miller, 38, former resident of this city, died yesterday morning at Hopemont Sanitarium, where he had been a patient for some time. The son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Sam Miller, he had lived most of his life here and had a wide acquaintance. He conducted a sign painting service here. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the Kogelschatz and Coffman Funeral Home with burial to be in the Beth Jacob Cemetery here. An aunt, Mrs. Fannie Brenner, has come here for the funeral

 

Little Esther Wolf Dies in Everett, PA. - Word was received here today of the death of little Esther Wolf, 3 year old daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Harry Wolf, formerly of this city, which occurred Friday night at the home of her parents in Everett, Pa. The remains will be brought here Sunday and taken to the home of Mr. J. Fine, North Queen street, where the services will be conducted. Interment will be in the Jewish cemetery.
